BUILDING A LIVING LEGACY
Born in America and proudly a Nigerian citizen too, I always envisioned a future where young girls could shape their destinies.
Afterall, that was the story of my life. A Wall Street trader and newly minted Olympian, my Olympic journey unveiled how difficult it was for young girls to dream of where I’d been, let alone strive for it. For many young girls in my native Nigeria, access to quality education was a fierce struggle marred with inequity and inadequacy.
For those fortunate to be blessed with athletic talent, the road was even more arduous, forcing a premature and detrimental choice between a pursuit of academics at the expense of athletics and vice versa. Finally, as the Millennial entrepreneurial renaissance was underway, there were swaths of women being left behind.
BUT WHAT COULD I DO?
A lot, I learned.
In forming Let Girls Read, Run, Grow a few months shy of my 30th birthday, my mission was clear. To create real opportunities for African girls to thrive – not just survive – through education, athletics, and entrepreneurship. We figuratively feed the mind and body through education and sport at Camp NexGen™ and LGRRG Academy, and literally feed the masses through our farming co-op initiatives and orphanage support.
